Thousands of eager gymnastics
coaches and gym owners have descended upon Anahim, California for
the World Championships of Gymnastics. Held in conjunction
with this event is the annual USA Gymnastics "Congress" featuring
lectures, seminars, and an exhibition hall with vendors from
throughout the industry.
Among
those who will be presenting at Congress is Lynn Burgess, owner of
Yoga From the Heart in Florida. In addition to holding an M.B.A.,
Burgess is registered with the national Yoga Alliance at the highest
500-hour level. She'll be guiding
owners and coaches down the path of
integrating stress-relieving philosophy and the wisdom
of yoga into modern day life. "I’ll be emphasizing the many practical benefits and essential applications that yoga can
bring to life in the fast lane," Burgess
says.
Inside
Gymnastics recently had the opportunity to catch up
with Burgess...
Inside: Lynn,
Tell us a little bit about your business in
Florida...
Lynn:
My business, Yoga from
the Heart, in Sarasota
offers group
yoga classes, private yoga instruction, teacher training, and
corporate training.
Inside: Tell us a little about your background with Yoga –
how you got started, how long you’ve been practicing, etc.
Lynn: Ten years ago, I was a stressed out,
overworked, fast-tracking M.B.A. yuppie. When a co-worker suggested
that I try yoga as a way to reduce stress, I balked. Yoga wasn’t
mainstream then like it is now. Eventually I succumbed and my life
has never been the same!
Five years later, I left the corporate
America
to start my own company, Yoga From the Heart. In
2002, we were honored with the Woman Entrepreneurial Excellence
Award from the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce!
Inside: How
did you first become connected with gymnastics to present here in
Anaheim
?
Lynn: My friend, Susan
Polakoff, who takes yoga classes from me in the winter, suggested
that there were a number of similarities between being a yoga studio
owner and a gym owner. Susan thought information I share in my
program, Performance Under
Pressure, with business owners, managers, and executives
throughout the U.S.
would
be beneficial here in Anaheim
. I contacted
Kathy Feldman and the rest is history!
Inside: What will you be talking about in your
sessions?
Lynn: I’ll be showing clubs owners how to integrate
the poses, philosophy, and
wisdom of yoga into modern day life. Specifically, I’ll be
emphasizing the many
practical benefits and essential applications that yoga can
bring to life in the fast lane!
Inside: What do you think the benefits will be to
coaches/owners who attend your sessions?
Lynn: Coaches and
owners who attend my talk will learn a wealth of strategies and
exercises to help:
·
Release
harmful stress and tension from the body
·
Overcome the
most common work-related health problems
·
Stay calm and
in control in the face of adversity and challenge
Inside: Do you have a motto in life? Overall
Philosophy?
Lynn: My teaching, which I call, “Essential Yoga: Real Yoga for
Real People,” emphasizes ways to deal
with modern-day stress so that you can invest energy in the moment,
go beyond perceived limits and live your best life. With Real
Yoga for Real People, you discover that Your Own Greatest Asset (YOGA) is your innate
ability to CONNECT with
your inner self as you go about every day life in business or at
home
Inside: Have you worked with many gymnasts in the
past? What are some of the benefits for gymnasts who practice
Yoga?
Lynn: I have taught
several gymnasts at my studio in Sarasota
. Some of
benefits for gymnasts include increased concentration, focus, and an
ability to relax so that they can perform with more pleasure and
more efficiency.
Inside: It all sounds
very interesting and we're looking forward to hearing how it all
goes! |
